Tian Han Foundation — Preserving a Legacy, Inspiring the Future
The Tian Han Foundation is a national non-public fundraising foundation established in 1995 and named in honor of Mr. Tian Han (1898–1968), a towering figure in China's modern literary and artistic history. A prolific playwright, poet, and lyricist, Mr. Tian was a principal founder of China's spoken drama movement and a pioneering reformer of traditional Chinese opera. He also served as a key organizer and leader in the early progressive music and film industries. As the author of the lyrics to March of the Volunteers, the National Anthem of the People's Republic of China, his words continue to resonate as a powerful symbol of national spirit.
Mission
The Foundation is dedicated to commemorating Tian Han and his contemporaries, advancing research and exchange in Chinese and international culture and arts, carrying forward Tian Han's spirit and artistic legacy, promoting excellence in culture and education, and supporting charitable and public welfare causes in the service of national cultural development.
Origins
The Foundation was jointly initiated by fifteen distinguished artists and cultural leaders: Xia Yan, Ba Jin, Yang Hansheng, Bing Xin, Cao Yu, Wu Zuoren, He Luting, Zhou Weizhi, Yuan Xuefen, Lü Ji, Yu Ling, and Zhang Geng, with the support of national leaders. It was officially approved by the People's Bank of China and registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs in 1995.
Headquarters
The Foundation is headquartered at No. 9 Xiguan Hutong, Dongcheng District, Beijing—Mr. Tian Han's residence following the founding of the People's Republic of China and today a living monument to his enduring spirit. It operates under the registration and supervision of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as its competent authority.
Leadership
The inaugural Chairman was Zhou Weizhi. The current leadership comprises Chairperson Tian Huan, Vice Chairperson Feng Yuping, Secretary-General Ouyang Wei, and a governing board of 11 directors and 1 supervisor, supported by a multidisciplinary expert team. Registered capital stands at RMB 2.1 million.
Achievements
Since its inception, the Foundation has remained steadfast in its public welfare mission. Through document archiving, cultural dissemination, charitable initiatives, and international exchange programs, it has established itself as a vital platform for preserving Tian Han's legacy, advancing arts philanthropy, and fostering cross-cultural dialogue between China and the world.
